There's no better way to learn about wine than tasting comparatively, talking about it while you're tasting it ("so that's why this wine tastes different than that!"), and hearing about the wine's background. (Plus, it's the most fun you'll ever have learning something.)

Great Grüner

Great Grüner

$15

Grüner Veltliner is likely the best white grape you haven't experienced enough of! Crisp, rich, grapefruity, peppery, minerally, great with food or on its own, Grüner's got it all. For this tasting we'll taste several examples from Austria - the grape's home and where it's primarily grown - at a range of prices and quality levels, and exploring the differences between the country's regions and winemaking styles, along with a couple of international examples! The wines will be:

Artner 2017 Grüner Veltliner, Carnuntum Austria ($16.95)
Laurenz V. 2015 "Singing" Grüner Veltliner, Kamptal Austria ($20.95)
Weingut Stadt Krems 2015 Grüner Veltliner, Kremstal Austria ($24.95)
Rudi Pichler 2016 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Terrassen, Wachau Austria ($43.95)
Jules Taylor 2017 Grüner Veltliner, Marlborough New Zealand ($17.95)
Tatomer 2017 "Paragon Vineyard" Grüner Veltliner, Edna Valley California ($25.95)

Far North Spirits Tasting with Owner Cheri Reese

Far North Spirits Tasting with Owner Cheri Reese

$15

Join us Thursday, May 23 in Shorewood as we welcome Cheri Reese, co-founder and owner of Minnesota's Far North Spirits. We love small-production products here at Thief Wine and the small-batch spirits of Far North are some of the best of the Midwest! Their spirits are mainly produced from a unique rye farmed by the owners on their land in Hallock, MN and have consistently proven to be favorites in the shop and at the bar in Shorewood. For this tasting, four of their spirits will be sampled with each spirit sampled neat, as well as accompanied by a cocktail to best showcase their unique, and delicious product. Far North owner Cheri will do the talking, and Thief's manager and spirits guru Chris will do the mixing. Seating is limited to just 16 tasters, and this is a tasting that is surely not to miss!

New Zealand Winemaker Tasting with Clive Jones of Nautilus Estate

New Zealand Winemaker Tasting with Clive Jones of Nautilus Estate

$15

Please join us for a wonderful tasting with Clive Jones, winemaker at Nautilus Wines in Marlborough, New Zealand. Founded in 1985 (early days for New Zealand wines!), Nautilus is considered one of the benchmark producers in the country, with sustainably estate-grown wines that showcase Marlborough's sunny yet cool climate and distinctive soils. In addition to producing the two grapes most associated with the region - Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir - Nautilus also crafts a few other lesser-grown grapes, with impressive results. We'll taste the Gruner and their sparkling in this tasting - it should be a fun one!

Why the name Nautilus? From their web site: "The mathematically perfect spiral of the Nautilus shell has been admired since  ancient Greek times. This shape is found throughout nature: in the growth of seeds on a sunflower head, in the air movement of a cyclone, or in the spiral through which a hawk flies towards its prey. This natural balance and proportion is something we seek to express in our wines." It's a great analogy, and after you taste the wines, we think you'll agree that they've succeeded!

The wines will be:

Nautilus Estate NV Brut Cuvee, Marlborough New Zealand ($34.95)
Nautilus Estate 2018 Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough New Zealand ($16.95)
Nautilus Estate 2015 Gruner Veltliner, Marlborough New Zealand ($28.95)
Nautilus Estate 2013 Pinot Noir, Marlborough New Zealand ($31.95)
Nautilus Estate 2015 "Clay Hills" Pinot Noir, Marlborough New Zealand ($49.95)

This is a casual drop-in tasting - stop in any time between 5 & 7 p.m.

Winemaker Tasting with Napa Valley's Trujillo Wines

Winemaker Tasting with Napa Valley's Trujillo Wines

$15

Please join us for a fantastic tasting with Michael Trujillo, founder and winemaker of Trujillo Wines in Napa Valley. Michael has been making wine in Napa for decades at Sequoia Grove, where he is now the President and Director of Winemaking, and fulfilled a dream by starting his own label with the 2011 vintage. His wines are exquisitely crafted, very small production (only a few hundred cases of each wine), and delicious! For this tasting we'll taste through four of Michael's Trujillo line along with two wines from Materra, where he is the Special Projects Winemaker. This is a great chance to meet and talk firsthand with the winemaker and enjoy some outstanding wines while you're doing so!

The wines will be:

  • Materra 2017 Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley California ($27.95)
  • Materra 2010 Merlot, Napa Valley California ($19.95)
  • Trujillo Wines 2018 "Madelyn" White Cuvée, North Coast California ($26.95)

  • Trujillo Wines 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley California ($85.95)

This is a casual drop-in tasting - stop by any time between 5 & 7 p.m.
